World libraries, the role of cultural agencies

Cultural actions are among the best tools for ministries of foreign affairs worldwide. Many countries who choose to work with cultural actions could potentially reach millions of citizens, inclusive of those living in remote areas. One of these cultural actions is that of establishing and opening cultural centres. This paper presents libraries as providing outstanding service in all these centres. Through a historical and numerical analysis of the libraries of The British Council, the Alliance Française’s Institut Français, the Goethe Institut and the Cervantes Institute, it can be shown that libraries are a real tool for public diplomacy that can exceed its remit of social assistance, social services and education. To conclude, this paper will also look at actions that could be undertaken to improve and cater for network libraries

Ten years of research on ResearchGate: a scoping review using Google Scholar (2008–2017)

Objective: To analyse quantitatively the articles published during 2008–2017 about the academic social networking site ResearchGate. Methods: A scoping bibliometric review of documents retrieved using Google Scholar was conducted, limitedto publications that contained the word ‘ResearchGate’ in their title and were published from 2008 to 2017. Results: The search yielded 159 documents, once a preliminary list of 386 documents retrieved from Google Scholar was filtered, which eliminated about 60% of the results that were bibliographic citations and not documents. Papers in journals were the most numerous type of documents (n = 73; 46%), followed by conference papers (n = 31; 19.5%). Contributing eight publications, two Spanish scholars (Delgado López-Cózar and OrduñaMalea, who were co-authors in each case) were the most prolific authors writing on this topic during the ten-year period. The keywords most used in the documents were ‘ResearchGate’ and ‘Altmetrics’. The publications were cited frequently since 2014 (more than 90% of the total cites fell in that period), and those with more than one author werethe most cited ones. The authors of the documents were mainly librarians and information science professionals, who wrote primarily as co-authors with colleagues from their own institutions, mostly published in English. Conclusions: Interest in ResearchGate has grown since 2015, as evident from the number of articles published and the citations they received. The use of social networking websites, fixed and mobile internet, has been placed in a situation of global explosion such a degree where the user behaviour is raising some concerns in the mental health community. The article shows the attractiveness of social networks and their consequences. In order to reduce and even eliminate the disorders that sometimes cause the misuse of social networks offer some recommendations to follow, like training of network access, application of codes of conduct and codes of best practices and patterns of use

¿Las revistas científicas españolas hacia el acceso abierto, open peer review y altmetrics?

Academic communication is changing. Open access seems to be consolidating and initiatives such as Plan S abound so that all science financed with public funds is published openly. Against this background, we have analyzed the vision of authors and publishers Spaniards before these and other technological and structural changes. For this we have interviewed in depth 15 directors and heads of academic journals indexed in Web of Science or Scopus. On the other hand, we have launched a survey of 1,254 authors from the same journals

The role of libraries in cultural centres Abroad: an insight

This research paper sets up a typology of libraries managed by cultural centres abroad. Nearly 2,200 libraries linked to a dozen of different cultural organizations provide not only traditional services such as loan and access to printed and audiovisual materials but they also approach local citizens, offering help and services in matters of education, literacy, cooperation, social issues or development. These actions may fit under the label of cultural diplomacy actions. This paper analyses the relevance of those cultural centres and offers a classification through a table including networks of institutions of the thirty most significant cultural centres worldwide

Networks or partnerships are used by humans since the beginning of humanity and its analysis raises concerns from many different sectors of society. In the era of the network of networks, Internet, networks are generated by virtual connections of the agents. Social Network Analysis (SNA) studies the relationship relation to each other, the social structure. It is an area that is emerging as essential in decision-making processes for its ability to analyze and intervene in the behaviour of structures. We analyze three SNA tools that monitor conversations on the Organization "IFLA" keyword in order to measure the feeling of them, managing social efforts to relate the flows between the entities, groups, etc
